wir von Refugees Eman­ci­pa­tion (RE) hof­fen, dass Sie gut in das neue Jahr ges­tartet sind und wün­schen Ihnen auch für das weit­ere Jahr nur das Beste!
Uns gibt es nun schon seit 14 Jahren. Im Jahre 2000 starteten wir unser, das in dieser Form bis dahin in Deutsch­land einzi­gar­tige, Pro­jekt. RE war der erste,von Geflüchteten selb­st ini­ti­ierte und organ­isierte Vere­in. Wir set­zen uns dafür ein, dass Asyl­suchen­den sowohl fach­lich als auch struk­turell Zugang zu Com­put­ern und dem Inter­net ermöglicht wird, damit Iso­la­tion­s­mech­a­nis­men aus­ge­he­belt wer­den und die Leben­squal­ität durch selb­st­bes­timmtes Han­deln verbessert wird. Im Rah­men des Pro­jek­ts betreiben wir mehrere Inter­net­cafés in Gemein­schaft­sun­terkün­ften für Asyl­suchende in Bran­den­burg und Berlin. Die Nutzung aller Inter­net­cafés ist kosten­los. Die Inter­net­cafés sind offene Räume, die Asyl­suchende selb­st ver­wal­ten und in denen sie alter­na­tive Bil­dungsange­bote (z.B. Com­put­er- und Deutschkurse) wahrnehmen kön­nen. Pro Tag nutzen ca. 700 Asyl­suchende die Internetcafés.
Lei­der haben wir momen­tan mit finanziellen Schwierigkeit­en zu kämpfen. Die Bere­it­stel­lung, Instal­la­tion und Reparatur der Com­put­er, des Zube­hörs und der Net­zw­erke kostet Geld und Zeit. Wir arbeit­en fast auss­chließlich mit sehr alten Com­put­ern, die uns durch Spenden zukom­men. Diese funk­tion­ieren manch­mal nicht richtig, sind sehr langsam und gehen meist schnell kaputt. In den let­zten Jahren sind unsere Ein­nah­men zudem gesunken, die Kosten jedoch sind gestiegen, sodass wir seit Län­gerem nicht mehr in der Lage sind, unsere laufend­en Kosten, vor allem die Mietkosten für das Büro in Pots­dam, zu tilgen. Wir arbeit­en mit Hochdruck daran, unsere Sit­u­a­tion zu verbessern. Alleine schaf­fen wir es jedoch in der kurzen Zeit, die uns noch bleibt, nicht: wenn wir nicht schnell eine Verbesserung unser­er finanziellen Lage aufzeigen, müssen wir Mitte Feb­ru­ar aus den Büroräu­men in Pots­dam ausziehen.
Deswe­gen sind wir auf Ihre Unter­stützung angewiesen! Wir wollen mit unserem Pro­jekt weit­er­ma­chen und so vie­len Men­schen wie möglich den freien Zugang zum Inter­net und die Inte­gra­tion in die Gesellschaft ermöglichen. Dank­end wür­den wir ihre Geld­spende (oder Sach­spende in Form von Com­put­ern und Zube­hör) ent­ge­gen nehmen. Auch kleinere Beträge sind her­zlich willkom­men, falls Sie momen­tan nicht in der Lage sind, mehr zu geben.

We from Refugees Eman­ci­pa­tion (RE) hope that you had a good start into 2014 and we wish you all the best for the fol­low­ing months!
Being found­ed in 2000, Refugees Eman­ci­pa­tion already exists since 14 years now. RE was the first NGO with the mis­sion to empow­er refugees which was ini­ti­at­ed and is orga­nized by refugees them­selves. The Project’s goals are to improve the qual­i­ty of life and the inte­gra­tion of asy­lum seek­ers into soci­ety by using the inter­net as a tool to reduce their iso­la­tion, con­nect­ing them with each oth­er, with their home­lands, and with their local com­mu­ni­ty. Gen­er­al­ly, insti­tu­tions start with inte­gra­tion pro­grams sev­er­al years after the refugee has had a legal sta­tus, but we start from the very first day of arrival in a Ger­man refugee camp – one could say at the grass root-lev­el — with the inte­gra­tion process. By
pro­vid­ing free access to the inter­net, we cre­ate space in which the asy­lum seek­ers have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to han­dle their lives self-deter­mined. We are run­ning sev­er­al inter­net cafés in com­mu­nal accom­mo­da­tions for asy­lum seek­ers in Bran­den­burg and Berlin. The use of all inter­net cafés is free of charge. Every day around 700 peo­ple make use of the com­put­ers and also take part in alter­na­tive learn­ing oppor­tu­ni­ties which we are offer­ing them (e.g. com­put­er cours­es and Ger­man lessons).
Unfor­tu­nate­ly we are recent­ly strug­gling with finan­cial prob­lems at the moment. The allo­ca­tion, instal­la­tion and repa­ra­tion of the com­put­ers, the tech­ni­cal equip­ment and the net­work cost both, a lot of mon­ey and time. We are work­ing almost exclu­sive­ly with donat­ed com­put­ers that are most­ly old. Some­times those don’t work prop­er­ly, are very slow and break after a very short amount of time. In the last few years our incomes dropped, but our expens­es increased due to the extend­ed ser­vices we try to pro­vide to the users of our inter­net cafés and cours­es. That is why we haven’t been able to pay our run­ning costs, in par­tic­u­lar the rent for our cur­rent office in Pots­dam dur­ing a peri­od of sev­er­al months. There­fore, we are work­ing very hard at the moment to improve our sit­u­a­tion, but as the finan­cial bur­den is seri­ous­ly threat­en our work and mis­sion we won’t be able to make it alone: If we are not able to demon­strate and obtain an improve­ment of our finan­cial sit­u­a­tion until the mid­dle of Feb­ru­ary, we will have to move out of the office in Potsdam.
That is why we hope for and also rely on your sup­port! We want to con­tin­ue with our project and enable the inte­gra­tion into soci­ety of as many peo­ple as pos­si­ble.
